Overview of Idea

This summer, two teachers and I are developing a mobile app, Dash, that is a data-conscious teacher-parent communication system. Dash allows teachers to effectively engage parents and increase student achievement. Put Dash in the hands of teachers to set the stage for a successful school year.

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

We will use the $5000 to put Dash in the hands of teachers serving low-income students before next school year. Specifically, we will spend money on product development and marketing. We have launched a product for beta testing but we need to further pay developers to fix bugs and incorporate user feedback. Simultaneously, we will travel to cities throughout the U.S. to promote Dash to teachers at Teach For America Institutes & pre-school year professional development weeks. In addition to travel costs, we need to print marketing and training materials for the teachers to whom we pitch. The $5000 allows us to showcase a high-functioning version of Dash to a critical mass of teachers and resultantly improve K-12 education outcomes.

My child's school has an automated call system that rings I don't know, 10 times some days, with recorded voices of admins giving me the same information over and over. I'd love to have this kind of communication with my kid's teacher.

Hats off to these young, dynamic and motivated teachers-entrepreneurs for leveraging technology to develop this novel productivity tool that promises to fulfill critical need for superior and efficient communication between teachers and parents. Students who might be prevented from falling through the cracks because of greater and timely attention/intervention due to this mobile app would be the real winners!

One of the biggest hurtles in our school systems today is the inability of teachers to effectively communicate with parents. Sometimes the problem lies on the parents' end, sometimes on the teachers'. By making it easier to establish clear communication between these two parties it will ensure that important (and often difficult) messages are conveyed and that children don't get swept away with all of the craziness that is everyday life. Great idea!

This is what I call organic innovation! which stems out of genuine need and sincere response to that need. What I like about this app is that it is easy to use and intuitive so adaptability will not be an issue and has potential to be embraced by the users as value addition instead of additional work. Parental involvement is a key to a child's success and this app can force parents to engage...even ignoring is an engagement.

My teacher, Ms Landrieu, always talks to my mom and my mom helps me in school. I love Dash because it will make it easier for more teachers to talk to my mom.

I am certain that this app will increase student performance, I love the fact that it focuses on positive reinforcement as well. Teachers rarely call parents about something good a student does, imagine the impact that this will have on the student.

This is definitely an amazing idea and well designed! I can see how this can be applied in the medical field as an easy alternative of contacting patients.

I taught in inner city Baltimore for 3 years, and made on average 10 phone calls a day to keep my parents involved. Dash would have made my life 100x easier! I especially love the sort function and the ability to see which parents prefer SMS. Great job Dash team!

Effective and efficient communication between overworked teachers and parents can only be described as a win for the students who must have support both in the classroom and at home to realize their potential. This product creates a bridge over that gap and is a terrific idea!

I wish this app had existed when I was teaching. Keeping track of 150 students is challenging even for the most organized teachers. This app helps seamlessly and easily engage with parents to support student learning in the classroom.
