Overview of Idea

Should a river have the right to flow? Do trees have the right to grow? What does it mean to give nature rights and what would our world look like if we did? We work with communities to pass laws that assert their rights over corporations and recognize rights for nature. Start the youth movement.

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

The youth summit will be held in Nevada City at the Woolman School, a nonprofit dedicated to peace, justice and sustainability. We will start the summit with team-building exercises at the on-site ropes course. Through experiential learning, youth will participate in a combination of interactive exercises to explore the concepts of community and nature’s rights, law and democracy. Sessions will incorporate learning pieces of rights-based organizing, the ideas behind Rights of Nature and what the movement looks like currently. Youth will lead discussions on how they can use Rights of Nature as a tool for protecting their local environments. All expenses for meals, lodging and transportation will be covered during the 1-2 day summit.

This is an idea that needs nurturing, a new paradigm that we need to feed and water, even though it may take a long time to get established. This is a terrific place to start! WE have no other choice but to begin.

You have my vote. If the foot print of man was removed from the planet , perhaps it would only take about 20 years for all evidence of his existence to disappear completely. Since we all love our amazing and forgiving home, let's rally around this incredible idea.

Rights of Nature will help youth guarantee a future of sustainable development that respects nature, rather than exploits it for market-based financial benefits. Spread the word to help start the youth movement!

This is a great movement and so relevant to important issues today that our youth are facing. They are the present and need to be change makers of the present in order to sustain the social change that we need!! Great work Global Exchange- Kylie Nealis and Shannon Biggs!

That's exactly the idea! Today’s youth must bear the future consequences of our current approaches to protecting and conserving the planet’s resources. They have a unique potential to be strong advocates for nature’s well-being and view their interactions with nature through the rights-based framework that is necessary to ensure earth’s survival. With this outlook, youth can guarantee the sustainability of their own futures.

Megan, thanks for your enthusiasm and interest in participating! If you also encourage all your friends to sign up and spread the word by sharing this link, we can make this proposal a reality. This summit will help all those who want to lead the change for a future where we use our democratic power to assert our rights and those of nature as well as protect our environment in order to guarantee a sustainable living and existence for all.

The Rights of Nature movement is working with people and communities around the world to recognize legal rights for Nature and to create a cultural shift where nature is not considered solely as propoerty- but as a system of natural law which humans must live in balance with! Young people are our only hope for a sustainable future, let's empower them with the tools to become advocates for nature's rights in their own communities and move this vision forward in their own unique ways!
