Overview of Idea

CYI is hosting its tenth annual Chinatown Beautification Weekend: a summer weekend of youth empowerment and community love. It consists of a city-wide high school youth conference and a clean-up of Chinatown with over 200 volunteers. Best part: high school students plan the entire weekend.

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

This will be the third time we have a conference and we want to make sure more participants can attend (we usually cap it at 100). Prior to the weekend, we want to host a handball tournament for youth in the LES and Chinatown to participate and learn more about CYI. In addition, this year we added a voter registration component into the weekend as it is an important election year and we hope to partner up with other organizations in NYC to make the vote really count. $5000 will help us make the tenth Chinatown Beautification Weekend the best yet with greater capacity at the conference, a new community event prior to the weekend, and voter registration! All CYI programs are coordinated for and by high school or college aged youth.

CBD is also trying to get people to register to vote this year, too. We could really use some extra cash to fund for supplies!

Whenever I visit Chinatown, I see trash cigarette butts water mixed with antifreeze mixed with fish remains discarded papers overflowing trash bins as a center of some decadent art piece of newspapers food containers bubble tea all material remains. It’s physically filthy. But does that mean Chinatown isn’t beautiful? I drop by Columbus Park and I see the immigrant’s transplanted culture of music and dance in an otherwise simple, public space. I walk through the streets of Pell and Doyer and I’m transported into the days of Chinatown’s conception- when it started out on these alleyway streets, in hard labor, hard living, but a budding community. Chinatown is home to my not-quite-discovered cultural heritage, childhood memories, and now, activism. Through Chinatown Beautification Day, I want to be part of a movement to show all communities the beauty that lies underneath the cover of physical filth and litter in Chinatown. The beauty of our Chinatown’s physical foundations, history, preservation, and growth.

CBD was a game changer for me- finding other youth who were just as passionate as I am about our community and being able to engage in actual practices rather than just sitting around and talking about the issues-- so great! I'd love for more people to have the opportunity I did to attend this FREE, JAMPACKED, AMAZING conference! Chinatown isn't just for tourists, it's a thriving neighborhood!

Chinatown Beautification Day is one of the most exciting events ever! As youth, we're showing the community that we CAN make a difference, no matter how old (or young) we are. In addition, we meet community leaders and participate in some of the most engaging workshops fathomable. With the addition of voter registration this summer, I'm even more pumped for the events!

Let me break it down a little: $5000 would pay for: -a bigger, better space for the youth conference -lunch and materials for the conference so our HS participants can continue to come for free -cleanup materials for the cleanup day (brooms, trashbags, gloves, etc) -voter registration materials (clipboards, pens) -t-shirts for our volunteers -guest speakers, performers, and workshop facilitators -A WEEKEND THAT CHANGES OVER 100 HS STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF COMMUNITY, SOCIAL ACTION, AND VOTING POWER. EXERCISE YOUR OWN VOTING POWER AND VOTE FOR US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
