Remember the first time you saw a photo you took? A video you shot? I bet it felt equal parts warm, fuzzy and powerful. Reel Treks works to empower young people to capture an experience in nature using a single roll of super 8 film. It connects the iGeneration to the history and craft of filmmaking.
The super 8 camera was the first consumer movie camera, completely changing who had access to capturing and sharing stories. That access is now commonplace. By coincidence, 1 reel of super 8 = ~3.5 minutes of film, the average length of YouTube productions today. In an era when cameras are everywhere, shooting on the first powerful format helps young people to understand + appreciate their place in the history of communication. It forces a deep understanding of the craft + results in a clearer sense of self + the environment. Ultimately, young people feel more empowered to shape the world through the power of storytelling. Funds will cover recruitment, film processing, transportion of participants as well as a film festival to share works.
