D.C. Free Summer Meals provides free breakfast and lunch to children and teens up to 18 years of age at more than 300 sites across the nation's capital. While the program is very successful in connecting children to healthy meals and summer enrichment activities, it is harder to draw in teens who not only need food, but activities to keep them engaged. D.C. Hunger Solutions will work with two groups of teens from different low-income areas of the city to develop and implement an outreach plan to attract teens to D.C. Free Summer Meals Program sites. This support will fund a stipend for a teen outreach specialist to lead the teens in developing strategies and leading implementation (e.g., a YouTube video, activities, prizes, etc.)

Events in Los Angeles require around $500 per event to have a 10x10 booth space. With the money we should be able to gain access to around 10 festivals, where we have the potential to educate thousands of people about the dangers of toxins that have been linked to various cancers, and provide them with easy tips on how to avoid those toxins by doing something as simple as buying a different brand.

If awarded, People for Palmer would use the $5,000 from the GOOD challenge to put heavier, higher quality garbage cans in the park as trash and wind overturn plastic cans; increase number of cans in the park as people tend to throw trash down if a can isn't nearby; add some recycling bins to the park to begin a culture shift in the park in favor of recycling; add signs encouraging park users to take pride in the park by using waste and recycling cans; and add pet waste containers for the dog walkers. All the receptacles for trash will be beautifully designed with our logo and environmentally friendly messages.

We want to have the garden up and running by August 1st! We have put together a detailed list of all the nitty gritty details, met with other community gardeners, and garnered community and city support. We will spend the $5000 on purchasing 30 containers, soil, seeds, tools, drip irrigation, fencing, and accessible walking path; securing required permits + insurance; installing the necessary water tap; and renting a forklift (or two) for construction. If we have any money left over, we will put it towards prototyping our soft-sided transportable container design for phase 2 of NOMADgardens.

In the city of Detroit I have come to recognize only 4 visible African American Sculptures in the city; all are close to each other and Downtown. I hope to use these funds to build and fabricate more sculptures in a communities were there is none. My skills will allow me to produce strong quality works very cost effectively. These funds with allow me to hire many young persons to help and teach with this sculpture work. My goal is to motivate and add light to these depressed communities. I know that adding art make a huge difference and having support would make these ideas possible.

The funding from the "Doing Good Challenge" will go directly to creating a sustainable program that is designed to help a Kansas City community not only immediately but also continue to grow throughout the years to build a stronger community. In 2011: Interns partnered with Operation Breakthrough and rose $2,500's to create a community garden and full ars festival benefitting 100 children. Projects like this have been impacting KC since 1978. This year will go beyond what's been done before. We are currently in the project selection phase for this year and will have a project selected by June 12th. Regardless of "Doing GOOD" selection we would love to share what we are accomplishing to our selected community in the KC area.

With this grant, our organization would hire translators to make our programming accessible to girls of diverse linguistic backgrounds. We would focus on the four most common languages other than English spoken by Portland residents, Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin Chinese and Russian, and reach out to these communities by providing translated versions of our program descriptions, camp applications and release forms. Additionally, in order to reach a wider range of girls with varied musical interests, we would purchase more gear to expand our hip hop elements track.

With your funding we can―with maximum creativity, joy, and care―create a volunteer recruitment campaign to let potential volunteers know we exist and help meet the demand of thousands who seek to improve their lives. Adult literacy is still a huge problem, and in the midst of this economic recession funding is fading. Just this year we learned that the Adult Education program in our public schools (that last reported serving over 275,000 people) is slated to be completely eliminated. This means more adults will turn to the Library for our literacy services. This grant will allow us to make a concerted push to recruit volunteer tutors across Los Angeles so that all adults that seek help will get help.

Our Rice Center for Engineering Leadership (RCEL) Summer Internship team was commissioned by a public Montessori school to provide a simple interactive science demo wall to supplement their science curricula. The current magnetic Widget Wall prototype contains interactive pieces that the students can manipulate to form tracks for a ball to roll down and demonstrates basic physical concepts while encouraging students to learn about the world around them. With this grant, we will be able to finalize our demo wall and manufacture and install four additional walls in Houston parks so that other students and the public will also have the opportunity to explore science beyond the curriculum their schools offer and succeed academically.

The five thousand dollars will allow us to reach out and host the plethora of organizations that service the needs of young people and their parents in our community. Specifically, the $5000 will cover the cost of space rental, office supplies and postage, setup including tables, chairs and signage, marketing and promotion, & entertainment and giveaways. More than anything, the $5000 will open up new avenues of exploration for young people. From fencing and music to college readiness and mentorship, there are so many amazing programs looking to connect with interested children. Access breeds opportunity.

At Miss DeVyne Crown Farm, children will have access to a full garden and farm that will shape their own views and practices about food and health. One reason why fresh produce can seem daunting is because many do not know how to utilize it! This holds true especially for kids and at the Miss DeVyne Crown Farm, they will learn how to easily and effectively use fresh fruits and vegetables in their homes. The best way for kids to eat healthy and new cuisine is for them to grow and cook it themselves. This grant will help support weekly, art-based workshops for kids and their families. We promote and stress the importance of farming and green spaces in urban communities; they are vital for healthy bodies, minds and sprits.

The majority of the $5000 grant will pay for participants' travel allowance on public transportation and expenses to complete missions on event day. The fund will also be used for the event’s logistical items such as booths, equipment, security and lunch for our dedicated volunteers. A small portion of the grant will go towards print materials to complement event information made available on mobile devices. The remaining funds will go towards prizes to supplement gifts donated by partner organizations for winners in four categories. While we already have committed social venture and non-profit partners, please shoot us an email at BuckleFreeLA@gmail.com if you are passionate and a good fit for event.

Over the month of August, a three-person MIMA staff will lead participants in the MIMA Method. The four-step process teaches both traditional musical skills and the deep experiential knowledge of creative collaboration. And, by its end, participants will have written, performed, and produced a full length music video encapsulating their experiences. Check out our website for previous projects. Having conducted 40+ programs, the MIMA staff operates efficiently. The $5,000, then, will provide the program’s essential logistical requirements: daily stipend for two MIMA instructors, (partially subsidized) one-month rental for Brooklyn, NY studio, publicity materials (announcement flyers, posters), and music recording equipment rental.

With the lack of funding for arts classes in schools, and with the recent closure of the oldest community recycling center in the USA (The Arcata Community Recycling Center), there is a large gap in local youth programs. The funds will go towards a pop-up store and event space. Our one month take over of a storefront will help highlight local creative upcycling products, workshops, and educational programs. We will provide local youth with valuable job skills by involving them in the entire process. By empowering young people to be creative and make things, we are supporting future entrepreneurs and thinkers. Currently, this is a volunteer effort and this pop-up store project will help us become more sustainable and create local jobs.

With $5,000 we'd be able to fund 5 high school volunteer groups that would meet monthly throughout the school year. This would result in over 3500 volunteer hours in support of organizations and individuals in need throughout Central Texas. Last year Positive Footprint helped fuel organizations such as Mobile Loaves & Fishes, The Capital Area Food Bank, The Texas Ramp Project, Austin's Good Cookies, Foundation Communities and Family Eldercare with over 600 volunteer hours. So far we have the applications from interested students, the know-how and the drive to do this, but we need your vote and help spreading the word, to make it a reality.

With $5000 we can send 50 inner city boys to a full day adventure camp where they will meet strong role models who will engage them in team building and leadership activities. During their adventure they will have an opportunity to practice Honor, Integrity and Respect. Our 25 roles models include young male professionals in the community. These young men are skilled in the professions of arts and business and embody the characteristics that we want to pass on to our future youth. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”
